Abstract/Résumé: Lost in Interpretation A Critical Account of Data-driven Approaches in Grammar Research In my talk I will discuss the gap between the promises, theorists of a corpus-driven approach to linguistic research (including myself) make, and the practice and outcome of data-driven analyses. In particular, I will address the following topics: - the commitment to the integrity of the data as a whole - the absence of linguistic knowledge and linguistic theory when approaching the data - the belief in the objectivity of the statistical regularities that form the basic evidence for (new) linguistic categories - the belief in the feasibility of an exhaustive analysis of the outcome
