Introduction

Abstract/Résumé: In our introductory talk, we will formulate some key questions that will frame the workshop. We will also give a brief overview of traditional and more recent approaches to the investigation of grammatical variation within pluricentric languages. Essential terms, such as 'standard variety' or 'sub-standard variety', as well as the challenges that are linked to the underlying concepts are to be discussed. Furthermore, we will focus on research methods and results derived from (electronic) corpora. In this context, we will present an ongoing tri-national project on grammatical variation in German.
