Audiencing and Emotions in Online Exchanges

Abstract/Résumé: The main goal of the paper is to present emotional reactions expressed verbally by CMC users in their audiencing behaviour. The research materials are selected types of online exchanges to investigate the extent to which they are likely to contribute to the development of different types of the users' online identities with varying degrees of cohesiveness among them. The methodology which is used combines a corpus-based quantitative method, a descriptive qualitative analysis of lexical meanings and a discourse analysis of online exchanges. In the descriptive analysis concepts and assumptions of cognitive grammar are used to investigate the conceptualisations these groups of users construct and the extent to which they are presented and conveyed in the interactions. The analysed exchanges involve CMC users’ commenting on different types of events which instigate their emotional reactions and contribute to the development of different types of online identities. A more specific aim of the analysis is to illuminate the linguistic contexts in which emotions which arise in connection with a particular event may spread in the audiences and affect their virtual and possibly real-life activity.
