Titre:
The study of word stress

Abstract/Résumé: In this talk I have three goals. My first goal is to survey relevant areas of research in the area of diversity in word stress, raise questions and point to areas that need our attention. I draw attention to the fact that a lot of recent work is based on large typological surveys of stress systems, i.e. digital databases which contain information about stress properties in large numbers of languages. In particular, two such databases (StressTyp, developed by myself in collaboration with Rob Goedemans, and Stress Pattern Database, developed by Jeff Heinz) have been publicly available on the WWW. The second goal of this talk is to demonstrate the use of StressTyp2. My third goal is to discuss some areal phenomena, based on joint work with Keren Rice and Rob Goedemans.
