Titre:
Traditional and new stress systems of Basque

Abstract/Résumé: In the majority of the researches made about Basque stres (Hualde, Elordieta, Gaminde, etc.) researchers point out the complexity of the subject, and the fact that a little territory could house so much different stress systems: From tonal accent systems to those fixed with no distinctive value. The aim of this contribution is to describe the traditional and new stress system of Basque. For that we will use different sources: first of all the Spoken Basque dialect corpus (EDAK) [aholab.ehu.es/edak/2]. This corpus has collected data from two generations using a questionaire with 201 questions in 100 localities. As far as the use of the Standard in early bilinguals is concerned we will use another corpus (Gaminde 2011). Firstly, we show the criteria for the classification of the stress accents. They are divided into two groups and are based on ideas developed by Bailey (2007), Heinz (2010), Hulst, Goedemans & Zanten (2010), etc. They are grouped as follows: a) The domain of accent insertion: word stem, prosodic word, phrase, all located in the focus position; b) The direction to count syllables: [> or <] and the position of the accentd syllable with respect to the nearest boundary: [1, [2, [3, 2], 1]; c) Weight and number of syllables and extrametricality; d) Interaction between stress and tone. Secondly, we will show the classification of traditional stress accents. In the way, we will show some processes in the evolution of the traditional systems pointing out the influence of the neighboring languages (Hualde 2003, etc.). And thirdly, we will deal with the new stress systems. In the conclusions we will try to make a new classification taking all data and stress systems into account.
